Knitting Your First Sweater - A Raglan Cardigan

Taking you to the Advanced BEGINNER basic knitting skills, we'll learn how to follow a pattern,  "read" your knitting, increase and decrease, make a simple buttonhole, track where you are in the pattern and fix some of your mistakes.  You will learn a basic optional seamed or no-seam raglan sweater pattern, easy enough for beginners who are already comfortable with the knit and purl stitches. We will be using an adaptation of this pattern which you must purchase for class on the internet: Ravelry: Buttons Cardigan #606 pattern by Dana Gibbons

Note that the simple modification eliminates the collar on the sweater so we can focus on the raglan shaping.  Also, your sweater will be in ONE solid color.  We won't complicate things with stripes.

The first class we will get started and focus on how to track your knitting and how to increase for the first section of the sweater which starts at the top (aka Top down). We will fill out a tracking sheet to help you know where you are in your knitting.

At the second class, we will start the sleeves of the sweater.

At the third class, we will start the body of the sweater, even if your sleeves aren't finished.

At the fourth class, we will seam the sleeves(if you did not choose the no-seam option), weave in ends, and close by discussing buttons and blocking.

You will be ready to knit one for yourself in a cool cotton or bamboo yarn.

Class may be cancelled if student participation minimum is not met.

Skill Level: Beginner
Skill Details: This class is for advanced beginners. it is not a learn to knit class. If you finished the four spa cloths, and the sampler scarf, you are an advanced beginner. You need to be comfortable knitting and purling in the same row to take this class. You will learn read and follow a sweater pattern, do simple increases, decreases and correct basic errors.
Materials Included: Hard copy pattern to be given out at first class
Requirements: HOMEWORK: BEFORE FIRST CLASS: Cast on 28 stitches with the needles and yarn that you are planning to use for your sweater and knit until you have knit a rectangle or square five inches long. Bind off and wash as per yarn label instructions and bring to class. Do not begin the pattern, as you will get the modification for no collar at the first class. 1. Pattern: Purchase here: for $6.00 2. Yarn: 500-750 yards of DK weight yarn of your choice to complete the pattern. Machine washable yarn is much preferred by new moms! Worsted weight cotton yarn is also usable in warmer climates. 3. Needles: Needle size recommended for your yarn. To give you more flexibility with gauge, a cable and set of points for an interchangeable needle would be a good investment in case you need to change needle size. I suggest circulars so you can optionally do the sleeves "in the round" to eliminate having to seam the sleeves. 4. Small scissors to cut yarn 5. Tapestry or yarn needle (blunt point and eye large enough for your yarn) 6. Crochet hook or knitting tool with crochet hook on the end for repairing dropped stitches. 7. Sticky notes or highlighter tape. 8. Notebook and pen or pencil 9. Optional Row Counter 10. Interlocking Stitch Markers
